BREAKOUT SESSIONS – Offered at 7pm and again at 7:30pm

 

Eight for Eight (Seven for Seven … Six for Six …)*

Presenter: Cynthia Wilson, Operations Manager, Solutions.

Learn simple steps to start NOW to begin preparation for high school and beyond. Solutions will share a "To Do List" and various career & college websites that will benefit Middle School parents and students alike.

I Know What I Want for My Child … Now What?

Presenters: Karen Geist & Mary Kay Knock, Twin Peaks Middle School Counselors

Executive Skills – Learn a new approach, with specific strategies, to help you "coach" your child in the skills needed for college success.

Let an Experienced Family Show you the Way 

Presenter: Kuptz Family

Come talk with parents who have survived their student’s transition to post-high school success

Applying To Highly Selective Colleges *                                            

 

Presenter: Todd Gutschow, PUSD School Board & Harvard graduate

 

Learn about what highly selective colleges look for in applicants and the challenges of getting into these schools.

 

Dollars and Sense                                                                             

 

Presenter: Nancy Morris, Business Development Mgr, Mission Federal Credit Union

 

Get answers to your questions about what to expect for college expenses, financial aid opportunities, and how to plan for what’s to come. Also covered will be tips for helping your student be financially responsible at an early age. Loren Martinez will also be able to answer parents questions in Spanish.

AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination*                 

Presenters: Mikki Matautia, AVID Coordinator, Twin Peaks Middle School

Information will be presented about the AVID program and how it can help students from middle school through high school.. 

Why Middle School Matters*         

                                                      

Presenter: Ruth McKinnie Braun, creator of website (SuchASmartMom.com)

 

Presenter will talk with students about what it means to take responsibility for their own success and how parents can spark a love of learning in their middle school children and help them establish high standards that will serve them well throughout their lives.

 

College and Career Readiness Activities in the Classroom

Presenter: Diane Cashion, Special Project Consultant, Solutions

Exciting things are already happening at our PUSD middle school campuses regarding college readiness and career planning.  Come hear what’s being presented to 6th, 7th and 8th graders, experience the "reality check" first hand and catch a glimpse of the exciting things to come!

 

The Mystery of the College Essay*

 

Presenter: Maureen Roadman, Executive Director, Solutions

 

Come and hear tips about the important essays that colleges require. You will have an opportunity of read actual essays written by SD area students and discuss the message that the essay sends. Participants will play the role of an admissions reader.

 

 The SAT – Should I Already Be Worried?*

Presenter: Randy Fadem, SAT/ACT Tutor

At the end of this session, you will know what the SAT is, when you should take it, how to prepare for it, and why it’s important. Mr. Fadem will also provide a worksheet to get students thinking about identifying their "dream college".

 

Stress Management for Parents and Students*

 

Presenter: Leslie Fadem, MFT

 

Middle school and what lies beyond can produce lots of anxiety for both parents and students alike. Learn concrete tips for stress management, overcoming procrastination, and dealing with test anxiety to maximize your success.   

Bootcamp College – Preparing Strong Families for the Future*

Presenter: Linda Doughty, Cal-SOAP

 

*Students are welcome to attend any of the sessions listed, however the workshops marked with a * are more geared for students

 

Parking will be available at the following locations: Twin Peaks Middle School, Tierra Bonita Elementary School, St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Budwin Lane, and along Twin Peaks Road.
